For three years, I have visited and photographed places in the outskirts of Stockholm. It came about because of the undergoing transformation of the city, following a decision that 140,000 new homes will be built between 2010 and 2030. This is an increase in the housing stock by 30 %. One of the aims is to give the suburb a more urban character, which will change many places fundamentally. Previously, the plan was to preserve the green areas of the suburbs, but in the comprehensive plan for the City of Stockholm from 2010, ‘The Walkable City,’ nature will be sacrificed for cross-connections and interconnections of residential areas. The images in this book show places that will either be, or are already, under construction at the time of writing. Some of the environments shown in the images are often called in-between spaces or barriers in the debate about densification.
